Women of Istanbul

Covered and uncovered women walk together in Istanbul. It is said that "women's fashion in this mostly Muslim city ranges from the all-concealing long black hajab, to tank tops and miniskirts". The pictures represent what we saw consistently throughout the old city.

Istanbul

In the process of booking our tickets to Greece I ended up booking a three day layover in Istanbul on the way to Greece. Well, I've always wanted to check out Istanbul and this an oppurtunity I could not pass up.

I was particulary interested in visiting Mosques. Most mosques today in the Arab territories are closed to non-muslims. Women entering mosques are not prevented through neither the Koran of the Sunna, but in some muslim countries, women entering mosques have not been welcomed, and mosques can be closed to women either by local rules or by habit.

In Turkey non-muslims and women can easily visit any Mosque. Dress conservatively, cover your hair, remove your shoes and your in.

Tulips and Turbans

We've been to Holland twice and have yet to see any tulips. I was pleasantly surprised to see such an abundance of beautiful tulips throughout Istanbul. Come to find out Tulips are native to Central Asia and Turkey. In the 16th century they were brought to Holland from Turkey. The tulip is actually the symbol of Turkey.

Back Home Again

Were are back!!

Tired and broke but happy.

We had a great time on my 40th birthday celebration vacation. Stay tuned for photos.

Now that I am 40.....

i finally got my head together
now my body is falling apart

is is easier to get older
than it is to get wiser

i believe to stay young you must stay curious
i can still dream big
i can still believe in romance
i can still take long walks
i can still be a good friend
i can still be a world traveler
i can still live simply
i can still give more
i can still be silly
i can still laugh
i can still be a warrior
i can still be strong
i can still live in different cultures
i believe in synchronicity, in intuition and in my own magic
