Raw. Bohemian. Chic. Visually unpretentious, yet sophisticated.

Tulum is gathering a large clan of converts ranging from European families to fashion bloggers to wellness gurus (and the occasional free-spirited yogi who practices the downward dog topless). The result? A fetching fusion of gorgeous, groovy and granola neatly wrapped into one 10km package.

Shopping in Tulum along the beach road is an indoor-outdoor affair,  shops blend in with the natural jungle surroundings

Clothes lines hang with beautiful skirts and linen shorts, and homewares are plentiful (as with their embroidered pillowcases with beautiful quotes in Spanish).

I loved the aesthetic of the shops I visited– everything had that zen-Tulum vibe. Just pull your bike up to the front, lean it against a tree and check out the beautifully curated items.

There’s something distinctive and very different about the way of life in Tulum.  From the peaceful beaches (there are no crowd clusters with beach balls and umbrellas on this strip), to the gravitational pull of hippies, artists and yogi’s alike, Tulum is nothing like the usual commercial vacation spots in Mexico.  It’s a little piece of paradise all on its own.
